Nathan Scott Wittler was born on July 15, 1958, the first son of Reverend Melvin A. Wittler and Mrs. Nancy Wittler Patriquin, while they served as Christian missionaries of the World Council of Churches in Istanbul, Turkey, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.

Nathan Scott Wittler was a voluntary recruited into the U.S. Navy, and trained in Boot Camp at Great Lakes U.S. Naval Base in Illinois and Indiana. Nate Wittler was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia as a Postal Clerk, PC-3 aboard the U.S. Platte oil ship which travelled to Asia through the Indian Ocean, and through Singapour, Malaysia, around the world from 1983 through 1986, during the American Bicentennial
